Why Ekue exists
Most accounting software is built for accountants and sold to everyone else. A person who runs a small business opens it, meets a chart of accounts, debits and credits, and forty settings for things they will never do, and goes back to a spreadsheet.
Ekue starts from the other end: what does somebody who isn't an accountant actually do? They send invoices and get paid. They get bills and pay them. They buy things and keep the receipt. Once a year, their tax agent needs a set of figures. Ekue is those four jobs, done well, and nothing in the way.
What we believe
- Plain words on the screen, a real ledger underneath. You never have to think in debits and credits, but every record posts to a double-entry ledger, so your accountant gets a proper trial balance.
- Your customers' money is never ours to hold. Card payments go to your own Stripe account. They never pass through Ekue.
- Your books are yours. Export everything, any time, as a zip of spreadsheets and every file you uploaded.
- Stopping isn't losing. If you stop paying, your books turn read-only for a year. Nothing is deleted while you decide.
- A model never writes to your books. Ekue can read a receipt and fill in the form, but you check it and press save.
- Nothing happens behind your back. Recurring invoices wait for you to press "Create them". Imported bank lines wait for you to review them.
What Ekue leaves out
Payroll, inventory, purchase orders, time tracking, sales tax filing and multiple currencies. Each is a product of its own, and adding them would make Ekue worse at what it's for. If your business needs them, we'll say so honestly on our comparison pages.
